  1. I so hope she wins. Everything costume-related for Black Panther made me gasp in amazement when I watched the movie and then finding out all the research and detail that went into each style and element. It was meticulous and gorgeous.

  2. As someone who studied theatre design and loves cinema, I confess I’m sometimes saddened by the way this site talks about the art and work of costume design. That said, this article this article surprised me. Honestly, I couldn’t agree more with your assessment (though the Buster Scruggs costumes are more interesting than you made them seem), and am hoping Carter does indeed win the Oscar. Thanks for this great write-up.

  3. Yes, definitely. I think with the scale, storytelling, and imagination it should totally win. But if it doesn’t, I at least need MQoS also not to win.

  4. Unfortunately, I can’t get behind this. I think because Black Panther, as a whole, was incredibly underwhelming to me, as I felt that it was just so over-hyped. To me, it was just a standard super hero flick. That’s not a bad thing, I love super hero flicks. I have a blast watching them, but Blank Panther sort of felt like a let down after constantly hearing how wonderful and amazing it supposedly was. And while I think it deserves a nomination for best costumes, it doesn’t deserve to win.

  5. I agree with your assessment. I, too, feel that Ms Carter created a world thru clothes that was beautiful, very African (Yay) and was spot on with the denizens of Wakanda from the King, his family, nobles, warriors and ‘the Wakandan on the street’.

    I hope she wins.

    Wakanda forever!

  6. I thought the votes were by the 60-year-old white men’s babysitters and gardeners…. ;)

Totally agree with you, fwiw. Unlike the poor Amazons over in the DC movieverse, Carter’s designs are going to keep showing up intact on multiple occasions and be a reference point for productions on which she’s not directly involved.

  7. I was gobsmacked by the costumes of Black Panther. I recognized many of the cultural references (thank you for defining them) and was thrilled to see that. If Ruth Carter doesn’t win, there is no justice.

  8. Yes!!! So much research went into Black Panther and while I do love me some Sandy Powell, to me Ruth Carter made BP absolutely spectacular. Reading about all the the real life inspiration behind the costumes made me so happy!

I don’t regard “Black Panther” as the best comic book movie I have ever seen. And I’m not that happy with its Best Picture nomination. I didn’t like the movie’s third act. But . . . those costumes were outstanding and more importantly, very original. I think Ruth Carter won a very well deserved Best Costume Design Oscar.

  10. Anyone else have to laugh at Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry dressed in a mix of ALL the costumes? The rabbit hand puppet was such a good quiet joke, too.

  11. Yes! For Black Panther, Ruth E Carter did with costumes what JRR Tolkien did with language when he wrote the Lord
Of the Rings trilogy! Too bad most people don’t consider that kind of thing when handing out awards…
