  1. Lady Rosamund Painswick in Downton Abbey and Lark Rise to Candleford.

  2. I love Samantha Bond. She shows up in so many places! If you want to see a very young Bond check out Rumpole of the Bailey where she plays the first Liz Probert (later taken over by Leo McKern’s daughter Abigail)
    – Rumpole’s Last Case (1987)
    – Rumpole and the Judge’s Elbow (1987)
    – Rumpole and the Official Secret (1987)
    – Rumpole and the Blind Tasting (1987) .

  3. I just finished rewatching the 1983 Mansfield Park. It’s the best, most faithful, adaptation of Austen’s under-appreciated work. Samantha Bond is very good as Maria. I enjoy her in everything I’ve seen her in.

  4. My favorite Samantha Bond roles were featured in “Mansfield Park”, “A Murder Is Announced”, and “The Ginger Tree”.

  5. She’s in everything! Lady Rosamund, along with Lady Edith, had the clothes I most coveted on Downton because of the redhead thing. Look at those sleeves!

  6. I adored her in Home Fires! Overall I really liked the series and think it didn’t get enough recognition when it ran.

She’s very good in a lot of period dramas and I very much enjoy watching her performances. 🌷

  7. The “Emma” link goes to the Gwyneth Paltrow version, but wasn’t Samantha in the TV version with Kate Beckinsale?

      1. Samantha Bond is totally awesome. She definitely has a perfect period look. My favorite of her costume drama roles is Lady Rosamund in Downton Abbey. Frances Barden, her role in Home Fires, is a close second. Lady Rosamund was a well-rounded character with virtues and foibles all rolled into one, whereas Frances wasn’t allowed enough foibles to seem real. She was the sensible, I’ve got to keep it together for every one else’s sake character-type instead of being as fleshed out as Lady Rosamund. Spoiler alert re Downton Abbey: The Movie–One of my few complaints about the film was Rosamund’s absence. Thanks for this WCW. I’m going to try to check out that Mansfield Park version now because I really didn’t like the version from the 90s.

  8. I had no idea she was in all of these! I didn’t know she was in The Ginger Tree, I loved the book but I’ve never been able to find a copy of the DVD, but I think it’s on YouTube. And now I must watch the 1983 Mansfield Park — heck, time to watch ALL the 1980s Jane Austen adaptations, I’ve never watched any of them!

  9. All the love for her turn in Erik the Viking! She made me forget the terrible costumes in that great film.

  10. I had forgotten all about MThe Ginger Tree!!! I loved that! It was like a distaff Shogun if the Richard Chamberlain character opened a fashionable couterier;s boutique.

  11. Her Dad, Philip Bond, also did Period. He was Albert Fraser, who married Elizabeth in The Onedin Line, which also had some amazing actors in it.
