  1. I’ve seen the movie in the theater with my boyfriend who is a balloon pilot himself. Great fun and a big relief to see a man and a woman going on an adventure and not falling in love.
A balloon magazine my boyfriend has a subscription to had an article about the film. As you say, the action sequences are very implausible, but much of the scenes with the balloon in them are real film, not computer-made. Anytime you see the balloon as a whole, or a big part of it, you’re looking at actual balloon footage (though edited in color/background) which was made with a real replica balloon. The pilot apparently spent a lot of time on his knees on the bottom of the basket in an attempt not to riun the footage. Also the scene in which the balloon rises from the stadium, the almost-fall-on-purpose of Amelia (stunt double) and the gasp from the audience is all filmed directly.

  2. I liked this movie a lot, even though my terrific fear of heights made me absolutely terrified and dizzy at times.

  3. Thank you for the review. We have not seen the film yet, but it is tagged to watch on our Amazon Prime account.

  4. Ok, it’s seems that I’m putting this is more and more of my comments lately: Now, I’ve got to go and watch this film. For as much as I adore costume films, there’s something about this particular period on film that makes me cringe (even though I can’t name any specific examples at the moment) because this era usually looks comes off looking like “fake costume movie world” rather than 18-whatever. So, I passed on this movie even though I like Eddie Redmanye and Felicity Jones as actors. Also, glad to hear there wasn’t a romance tacked on to this. Of the costumes pictured, I think Eddie Redmayne looks really smart in his get-up, and I adore Felicity Jones’s “sensible” ballooning gear.

  5. I was an extra in the balloon launch sequence. The costumes we wore were absolutely incredible – many of them had been brought in from Italy and they were just beautiful. The costume and hair teams were so skilled and so much time went into getting everyone ready each day. I thought we all looked fantastic. I felt very fortunate to be on that shoot.

  6. I also love that her makup, Felicity’s, is appropriate for “the stage”.
I’m sorry I missed this on the big screen, but plan on watching it soon.
    Thanks for the review!

  7. I love this movie, I’m rewatching right now and I see a very tiny historical detail : Amelia’s armpits are not shaved (or maybe it’s to show that she’s depressed but I prefer to think that it’s for historical accuracy
