I don’t know how many times I have to go on the record about not liking musicals, but here I am yet again, watching a musical … and even enjoying it! Spirited (2022) isn’t a full historical flick, but it does center on the timeless Dickensian classic, A Christmas Carol, and stars two of my favorite actors, Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, so I’m calling it close enough. Plus, it’s a holiday film! And Christmas is only a few days away! Let’s let the holiday spirit (well, three of them, at any rate) flow through us!

My uncle is an extra in this (he plays the old Ryan Reynolds, who clutches his chest and dies). A little disconcerting, but he had a great time. The whole thing was filmed in Boston, and the Victorian scenes were filmed on a street just down from my office. It’s an almost perfectly preserved historic street (which has a lot of bars now, not stores!).
Happy to see Sunita Mani in this after the still-mourned-by-me cancellation of GLOW (which, as it’s set in the eighties, falls out of the bounds for this site to review, but which is still a pretty great watch for period costumes).
