Perry Mason (2020-): Chapter 14

As Perry Mason (2020-) Season Two is winding down (only two more episodes left! ::sob::), the plot is heating up, and the characters are under immense pressure to figure out how to save the lives of the two accused boys. All manner of things start to go wrong for Perry and crew in this episode, and as a result, there’s not a lot of showstopper costume content. However, what is on screen is still worth discussing!

Red Converse tennis shoes … Not a good sign if you watched the previous episode.

Marion and I have the same expression, wishing she would get some full-length shots so we can see her amazing outfit. Look at that collar! I wanna see the whole thing!

Random Lady in the Hallway has a fabulous hat. Probably the thing I love the most about this show is that even the most minor characters have wonderful costume details.

Paul and Clara get a date night to a fabulous nightclub. Again, just check out all those fantastic costume details on the extras. No detail left out!

A close-up of Paul and Clara. It’s interesting to note that Clara’s dress (which is hard to see under her shawl) might be a little outdated compared to the outfits of the other women around her. The early-1930s silhouette favored floor-length evening gowns, as opposed to the mid-calf length hems of the previous decade. It would fit with the characters as having fallen on somewhat more straightened circumstances of late, what with Paul quitting his job as a police officer last season.

Della arrives at Camilla Nygaard’s mansion and is quickly dispatched to milady’s quarters by the butler, who is leaving for the evening. He instructs her to bring Camilla her usual cocktail before taking off. Della is probably standing there wondering what the hell just happened…

She finds Camilla listening to music and feeling herself in a fabulous kimono and nightgown combo.

Up close you can take in Camilla’s amazing necklace, which has to be vintage. Looks like turquoise and coral set in filagree silver.

Over on the other side of town, Ginny takes Perry out to a Japanese restaurant, and he has a hard time with the chopsticks, and, well, the food too.

There was some spirited discussion about Della cheating on Hazel and whether that made her 100% a dick over on the Perry Mason subreddit. I mean, yeah, it does. Cheating isn’t cool. But it also shows some interesting character development for Della as she realizes she wants to be with Anita.

Least fun elevator ride ever, according to Perry and Della, after they are caught hiding evidence.

I’m really stunned by the marquee that crowd waiting to get into the club is standing under! The lighting system and the letters on the marquee are perfect, based on photos of old movie theater marquees from the period.
I have to wonder if that’s an actual location that perfectly preserves an old marquee, or if it was added to a building with CGI. Great recap, and thanks for braving the dim lighting to describe costume details!

Good question! I had the impression that they filmed a lot of scenes at various LA locations and there are plenty of fabulous Art Deco buildings still around down there.
