  1. I saw The Favourite at the New York Film Festival and did not disappoint. I’m looking forward to Vanity Fair (I’ve seen almost every other version). I hope that you guys review Colette. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the costumes. I personally loved the movie.

    1. How was it in terms of animals? I’ve heard things about Yorgos Lanthimos and his movie The Lobster, so as much as I would like to see this movie, I’m hesitant…

    2. I’m so annoyed that Colette is showing at NO theaters near me! I’d have to go an hour away, & I haven’t had the time to do so (I’d do it for the blog but my real life is nuts right now, sorry, folks). Same w/The Happy Prince, which is killing me, I know it won’t be shown in my vicinity :(

  2. I had thought Outlaw King was out—it was slated for last month but maybe they’re doing some recuts given iffy reviews?

Definitely looking forward to The Favourite. Disappointed that MQoS has great actresses and yet looks a mess. Also, working theory: Robin Hood really takes place in the Star Wars universe; the costumes look more like SW costumes than history..

  3. It’s interesting apropos ‘The Favourite’ that you only mention Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone whereas over here in the UK it’s all about Olivia Coleman. I haven’t seen her in this yet but she’s never not fabulous.

    1. I love Olivia Coleman! Sadly she’s not as well known here in the States—yet. But I think with the popularity of The Crown that will change. I got to “know” her through youtube clips of Mitchell & Webb, and then she was just fantastic in The Night Manager. I think she’ll be a brilliant QEII. And her ability to do both serious and comedic work looks like a great match for The Favourite. Of the 3 stars, she’s the one with the least International recognition right now, but she’s actually the one I am most interested in.

  4. Gotta go with The Happy Prince, The Favourite, Madamoiselle Paradise, The Aspern Papers and Vita and Virginia, not to mention the Freddy Mercury Queen movie of which I saw a trailer
    It’s awesome!

  5. At Eternity’s Gate looks good, but Van Gogh was 37 when he died. Willem Dafoe is in his early 60s. He’s too old to play him.

  6. I’m most looking forward to “At Eternity’s Gate”! Casting Willem Dafoe (though he is indeed much older than Van Gogh was at the time) is perfect casting, as he looks just like him, and is such a good and adaptable actor.

And, in spite of my better judgement and usual insistence upon historical accuracy, I’m actually looking forward to “Robin Hood”. I’ve seen another trailer in which the characters use modern/futuristic technology, so to me this version takes place in a futuristic Dark Age, if that makes sense. I find the concept interesting, so I’ll give it a shot.

  7. Oh gosh, those costumes in Robin Hood…. is it modern or not?! You can’t have both people.

  8. It’s funny to see Céline Sallette switching sides on the French Revolution with a character named “Reine” twelve years after being the “one line in 50 scenes” lady in waiting in Marie Antoinette.

Judging by reviews, what I’ve seen, and release dates The Favourite is probably the best movie of the bunch. The costumes look like they decided to fix their limited budget by going artsy/abstract though.

  9. More Fantastic Beasts, please! “Harry Potter” in 1920s/Deco New York City – for me, nothing is better.

  10. Mademoiselle Paradies was already in the theathers in Germany! I thought it was a great film, but the costumes were in a scale from “well, almost ok” to “absolutely terrible”. But I really liked the film though there were the typical “no period” costumes of the lower classes and ugly stereotype Rococo rental costumes because I loved the intense play of the leading lady.

  11. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7530986/

XVIII th century, french movie : Mademoiselle de Joncquières
(on September, but still on screen in France)

Madame de la Pommeraye has got about 12 dresses , most of them pleated in the back “à la française” but this bearded marquis has got three suits :a velvet blue, a velvet brown and a pale green.

  12. I’m hoping ‘Vita and Virginia’ will be better than the overall mess that was ‘Life in Squares.’ We need some good Virginia Woolf media to challenge the supremacy of Nicole Kidman’s vastly overrated performance in ‘The Hours’
