  1. My favorite Wilder role—although not period—will always be Leo Bloom in The Producers. However, for a period-set film, I’d definitely go with Frederick—”Tell me, do you pronounce your first name Froh-drick?”—Frankenstein.

BTW, the movie was a sendup of 1930s horror films, not those of the ’40s and ’50s. Brooks even used the original sets from James Whale’s Bride of Frankenstein.

    1. The husband of my best friend in grad school complained about Young Frankenstein “why is it black and white.” She didn’t even try to explain. My #1 favorite 2-word line “What hump?” God bless Marty Feldman!

  2. My favourite Gene Wilder film will always be The Producers. I mean it’s a laugh a nanosecond. Especially ‘Springtime for Hitler and Germany *sound of gunfire* Goose step’s the new step today.’
But my favourite costume film of his is Willy Wonka.

  3. I was a major Gene Wilder fan but I didn’t know until I read his obituary that he was a champion fencer. And of course, I loved him in “Start the Revolution without Me.”

  4. Mr. Wonka was my first, and you never forget your first. But my “my favorite Gene Wilder movie” list is about seven or eight titles deep.

  5. “Willie Wonka” was the first Wilder movie I ever saw. But I was too young to really appreciate it, until years later. However, one of my favorites is “Blazing Saddles”. I also enjoyed Wilder in his first two movies with Richard Pryor and “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ Younger Brother”.

  6. Gene Wilder was the best thing by far in Willy Wonka. I also loved him in Silver Streak and Young Frankenstein.

  7. My favorite movie of ALL TIME is young frankenstein, I saw it for the first time when I was about 10 and used to watch it over and over and I play it once in a while still. So it´s no question which my favorite Wilder role is!:)
