  1. The beauty of Rathbone is that he never looks as if he’s wearing a capital-c Costume. No matter the period, his outfits are always worn with a certain comfort and a feeling they are his actual clothes.

  2. I love the costumes. Especially the green Velvet traveling gown. However, what in holy good night is under her hat in the jail visit scene?! It looks like 2 of those koosh balls got stuck on her head with bobby pins.

  3. That orange metallic tissue gown does look so much like it was inspired by the Silver Tissue Dress in the Fashion Museum, Bath (still, as far as I’m aware, the only extant example of a complete 1660s gown).

  4. I really love the costumes in this movie, especially the orange tissue gown (I remember my jaw dropping when I first saw it). It’s amazing how good they are, especially given that it was made in 1944. The costumes in Forever Amber– made in 1947– were SO BAD.

Anyway, I really need to watch it again, though it does seem that Basil Rathbone is by far the sexiest guy in the movie (and not so much the pirate guy).

    1. Yep, ’44 wins for flashy fun, but hey, a paying reader asked, so I gave it a shot! And now we all know better, lol. It was a mildly entertaining movie to watch, at least.

  5. So good, and then the necklines are just that bit low at the shoulder, every time -rocking 20-21st century vibes. Like in Victoria. But I’m definitely in the “We <3 the Orange tissue frock!” club!!!
