  1. I must protest. I’m sure there are at least five of us 16th-century Spanish costume and fairy-tale / horror mash-ups loving goths out there.

    1. Of all the ones to be less than enthusiastic, really, Harry Potter, 1920s? I thot Tale of Tales would creep you out. I’m pretty sure that’s the one w/the preview of Selma Hayek eating a heart.

      1. Oh I’ll have to put my sweater over my eyes for the heart-eating, but the costumes! I don’t know why I’m not excited about Fantastic Beasts… I think I need to see some good female costumes to get there.

  2. Tales, Beasts, Versailles. The last would seem to have the most potential for interesting content with elements of Iron Mask, the Fronde, etc. I really wish someone would do a good mini-series on the Affair of the Poisons.

  3. You should watch the new BBC War and Peace. Some of the costumes are ummm interesting..

    1. I am still debating whether to watch it. I loved, loved, loved the 1971 BBC version and not sure I want to watch any other. The images I have seen don’t inspire confidence, Natasha’s modern hair style for instance and the odd contemporary looking evening gown in evidence. This “modernising” of costume seems to be a “thing” at the moment. Why bother to make a historical drama if it isn’t going to be historical.

  4. The costumes in Episode 1 are really strange. Gillian Anderson wears this half strapless purple number and Helene looks like some thing from the 1920s. I really don’t get it. Other characters are not as bad.Worth watching though.

  5. Tale of the tales isn’t spanish movie is a Neapolitan one, based on Lu Cunto de Li Cunti, a very famous book of novels written by Giambattista Basile, who was the first to write about “Cinderella”. Looking forward to watching at them all.

    1. The movie is based and filmed on all southern Italy. The writer was neapolitan, but some sets are also in Sicily, for example. The nice thing about this movie is that the whole cast may be not italian, but all craftmanship behind, from props, to costumes, to special effects, struggled to stay in Italy, to create work and to encourage Italy to make more movies like that. So…we got I Medici T_T

  6. Love and Friendship – serious? Have you ever read it? (If not, find a copy RIGHT NOW – look under “Jane Austen Juvenilia” – and read it before you do anything else. The rest of your life will thank you.) Anyway, Love and Freindship is basically Catherine Morland’s favorite daydreams brought to life, and then some. Total silliness ensues.

  7. Just finished Versailles…and the costumes are phenomenal, they don’t shy away from the effeminate look that Louis had, and the details are incredible. But most of all props to the hair people who make me super jealous of Louis and Philippe’s hair.

  8. For epic ruffs, wait for Tale of Tales ;) they have some incredible jewel ruffs, and even the extras have jaw-dropping costumes. I didn’t like the movie, but its aesthetics have been something so good that I’ve got to go back some years to find something so close to historical accuracy and so pleasing to the eye.
