  1. I couldn’t watch this. Luckily, I was watching at home so I could turn it off. I didn’t see the costumes because I was so appalled by the script and the bad acting and Mary smirking at herself constantly.

  2. I enjoyed the new Mary Poppins. The painted costumes for the Royal Dalton Musical Hall were the standout highlight for me! Though I really do want that blue coat.

I really liked this new movie immediately after watching it, but as it’s had time to settle in my head, my feelings have faded. It’s just not going to be as lasting as the original.

/potential spoilers/ Plot wise, I think the movie suffered a bit from making a cartoonish “bad guy;” the original had colorful characters, but no “evil villain.”

I also think the deux ex machina resolution to Michael’s problems at the end was a let-down. The ending of Christopher Robin was much more satisfying, while still understandable to an audience of mainly children. /end of potential spoilers/

I must say, Lin-Manuel Miranda is so genuinely charming. I think his cheery delight wasn’t just acting, in the special features he seemed just awed and thrilled to be there! Watching him meet Dick Van Dyke in the behind the scenes features, Lin was just glowing!

  3. I watched it on a flight last month. I hadn’t seen the original since I was a kid, and while I loved the costuming (even on Meryl Streep), I felt like the rest of the story was missing something. I had watched the 20/20 on it, and thought it would be much better than it was, but I still appreciate the effort put in by all the actors. Michael’s character annoyed the shit out of me, I am rather sick of the “helpless man” trope. But, Lin Manuel Miranda was fantastic! I hope to see him in more things in the future.

In short, the costuming was the best part. I loved everybody’s wardrobe, even the kids. I’m nearly 38 years old and I want a knitted fair-isle beret like the girl child (can’t remember her name).

  4. It’s on my Netflix to watch list but despite loving the cast I don’t have a big urge to see it, so it’s an I’ll get around to it eventually. I did love seeing the costumes though. :)

  5. The costumes were the best part. I want Mary Poppins’s entire wardrobe.

I really loved the little girl’s kelly green coat too. I want make an adult version for myself.

  6. I felt that the studio should have left out the songs on the most part bc they just didn’t measure up to the original soundtrack and Julie is a tons better singer than Emily.
The costumes were gorgeous and I, too want all of Mary’s clothes as well as Jane Banks’.

  7. In my opinion the first movie remains a timeless classic. The new Mary Poppins is far from talented in playing this role. The script written for this movie was truly a sign of poor writing quality. Having Michael deal with the death of a dead wife discourage’s the idea of a children’s move along with crooks running a bank. Utter waste of production..

  8. I didn’t have very high expectations when I watched this, but I actually really enjoyed it! Maybe it helps that as a kid while I liked the original, it was far from my favorite Disney movie (it often gave me nightmares, actually, so I didn’t watch it that often). I think it’s both helped and hindered by the existence of the original movie – there’s a built-in audience of people curious to see it, but a lot of expectations to live up to.
